Call our office as soon as possible and follow the emergency instructions if
you are in pain, if a wire is poking you or a broken bracket is hurting you.
Our phone number is 908-722-5233, press 3# and this will page Dr. Sanford.
Call our office immediately for an appointment if you break or loosen a bracket or wire. The brace may need to be re-fitted as soon as possible. You may have a situation that requires cutting a wire or sliding a bracket off a wire at night or over the weekend. If you need to cut a wire in case of emergency, you may use fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. As an added safety precaution, place a cotton ball or gauze square in the cheek area behind the end of the wire you are cutting to catch any fragment of wire. Please call our office the next business day, so that we may schedule an appointment for you.
Sometimes discomfort caused by a wire on your braces can be resolved by moving the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or eraser. If the wire will not move, try covering the end of it with a small piece of cotton or a small amount of wax. If the wire is painful, you may cut it. Please refer to the instructions under loose brackets or bands. Even if you resolve your wire irritation, call our office for an appointment.
Your retainer is a very important device in your treatment. Your hard work and investment in time and money can be compromised depending on the phase of treatment you are in by not wearing your retainer. Therefore, it is IMPERATIVE that you call us as soon as possible should you lose, damage or break your retainer. If wear is still necessary, we may be able to fix it or may need to take new impressions for a replacement. Either situation incurs a fee.
Most patients lose a separator during their treatment. Do not worry about losing a separator, but call our office to see if it needs to be replaced before your next appointment.
During the first week after your braces are in place and routine adjustments are complete, you will likely feel some pain, soreness or discomfort. This is a good time to use the materials we have provided in your brace-bag. Apply the Brace-Relief gel to the exact sore area, and remember to use the bite wafer exercises. They really work! You may take acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers while you adjust to your new braces. Avoid taking an ibuprofen pain reliever as this inhibits tooth movement. Finally, a warm wash cloth or heating pad may reduce the soreness in your jaws.
