Child Treatment

Early Orthodontic Treatment

Along with the American Association of Orthodontists, Sanford Orthodontics recommends that a child receive their first orthodontic evaluation by the age 7. This makes it easier for Dr. Sanford to determine the best time for your child to begin treatment or be put in our Observation Program for future treatment.

v-braces5What to Expect on Your First Visit

At Sanford Orthodontics you and your family will be welcomed by one of our team members at the front desk. They will assist you in signing in and answer any questions you may have. Our Treatment Coordinator will then acquaint you and your child with our treatment area while explaining all aspects of your first orthodontic experience, making you and your child comfortable and at ease. You may accompany your child into the treatment area if this makes you and your child more comfortable.

Your child’s initial orthodontic consultation will consist of taking diagnostic records and a complimentary exam by Dr. Sanford. He will then review their records, sharing his diagnosis. If treatment is indicated, we will create a personalized treatment plan for your child that will prove to be the most beneficial for their specific needs. We are here to answer all questions and there is never any pressure to make quick decisions.

What to Look For

Here are a few things to look for that may mean your child needs to see an orthodontist:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • A hard time chewing or biting food
  • Mouth breathing
  • Finger or thumb sucking
  • Crowded, misplaced, or blocked teeth
  • Jaws pop or make sounds when opening and closing
  • Teeth that do not come together
  • Jaws and teeth that are not proportionate to the rest of the face

Advantages of Early Treatment

Here are a few reasons why early treatment may be beneficial:

  • creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
  • creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
  • reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  • preserving space for unerupted teeth
  • reducing the need for tooth removal
  • reducing treatment time with braces

Appliance Options

We have a variety of braces and appliances depending on your child’s needs. They are:

  • METAL BRACES – still the popular traditional option but today they’re smaller, lighter made with surgical stainless steel and come with customized color elastic ties on the brackets for the fashionista!
  • CERAMIC BRACES – feature brackets that are made of ceramic materials which blend in with your teeth, making them more esthetic.
  • AMERICAN SELF-LIGATING BRACKETS – made in the USA!  The device made from surgical stainless steel makes it easier to operate the opening and closing apertures, while offering you strong, reliable materials to make your treatment progress with efficiency and speed. This cuts down on appointments and because there are no elastic ties to get in the way, patients have found it easier to keep clean, which results in better overall hygiene during the time of treatment. The self-ligation also cuts down on patient discomfort and gets rid of the friction caused by other appliances. In addition, because it is small, it is less noticeable, which helps patients feel better about themselves as they move through the treatment process.
  • RAPID PALATAL EXPANDER – an orthodontic device used to create a wider space in the upper jaw that is too narrow for the lower jaw or when the upper teeth are crowded or blocked out because of a small upper arch. It is attached to the upper molars and is simply activated by turning a key which gradually applies pressure, increasing the amount of space between the right and left halves of the jaw.
  • OCCLUS-O-GUIDE (OG) – a soft removable plastic appliance containing sockets that allow patients to perform “exercises” that encourage optimum arch development. Patients will be asked to practice active wear exercises with this appliance two to four hours a day. Active wear exercises require the patient to bite down on the appliance for about a minute and then release for 30 seconds. This will be repeated in 20 minute increments throughout the day totaling two to four hours of active wear. Patients will also be required to wear the Occlus-o-Guide at night.
  • RETAINERS – to be worn at night for life …wearing a retainer is one of the most important things you can do no matter your age or which type of appliance you choose. Teeth that aren’t held in place by a retainer long enough for the supporting bone to develop around them can drift back to their original positions.
